Music and Child Development

It seems to be a universal rule, that a little music in the classroom can add a lot to a lesson. We have found that most children love to listen to music as some point in the day. In some cases, it helps to calm them down before its time to rest. In other children a little music can help enhance creativity at art time. For others still, music can help a child remember the key parts of a lesson learned. At Adventure Learning Center, we understand that music and child development go hand in hand. Here are some of the many benefits to exposing your child to music.

Music and Child DevelopmentĀ We believe in harnessing the benefits of music and child development

  • Musical lessons can help develop language and reasoning skills. Studies have shown that children exposed to musical training will develop the areas of the brain most associated with these skills.
  • Playing musical instruments, even at an early age, can increase coordination and motor skills. Clapping a castanet or shaking a tambourine in time with others promotes hand eye coordination.
  • Music can help teach pattern recognition which will help a child develop their math skills. Playing songs offers pattern repetition in a fun format that will engage young learners.
  • Music not only helps with problem solving skills, it can also help a child develop healthy emotional skills. Children exposed to music at an early age tend to have higher self esteem and coping skills.
  • Children also develop a sense of achievement when they learn a new song or tackle a new instrument, which helps to foster a healthy self esteem.

We see so many of these benefits play out in our students at ALC. Twice a year the parents are invited to see their child’s efforts in the Winter Show and Spring Fling. What you may not see is the weeks and weeks of practice and preparation that go into these shows. The children are offered music class every Wednesday. Here they learn to work as a team, practice musical instruments and have fun singing with their friends.

We also love to offer resources to our parents to help continue these lessons at home. Here is a video that we discovered that can help expose children to Mozart while they giggle along with the silly instruments. Enjoy!
